CINCINNATI (WXIX) – The man accused of killing a 21-month-old on May 1 in Westwood has been indicted on additional charges, according to Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers. Edward Murray, 23, was originally charged with one count of murder for the death of 1-year-old Kareem Keita. On Monday, he was indicted on the following charges: Two counts of murder One count of felonious assault One count of child endangering On May 2, emergency crews were called to the home of Aminata Keita, the mother of the toddler, for a report of a non-responsive child. When medics arrived, they found Kareem unresponsive and not breathing. The child was transported to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and admitted into the ICU. Three days later, he was pronounced dead. According to Powers, a physical examination revealed that Kareem endured significant abuse. An autopsy found the following injuries: Cardiac arrest with severe diffuse hypoxic-ischemic injury. This is a type of injury that happens when the brain does not receive enough oxygen or blood flow, often causing cardiac arrest Bone fractures to the skull on the right parietal side and occipital (back of the head) area A rib fracture A subdural hemorrhage, when blood leaks into the membrane between the skull and brain Grade 5 liver lacerations with a hemoperitoneum, when blood collects between the abdominal wall and internal organs Retinal hemorrhages, also known as blood in the retinas Brain swelling due to a brain bleed
